Features

Exterior

Since its debut in 1948, the brilliant simplicity of its design has delivered unrivalled strength and legendary ability.

The cornerstone of Defender's design architecture, the immensely strong chassis imparts strength, versatility, durability and capability. The ladder frame design is far stronger than any open channel design and more adaptable than some of its competitors' unibody designs. The lightweight aluminium body is tough, with a no-nonsense simplicity and an adaptable slab-sided profile that's easier to configure.

Interior

Defender's brilliant simplicity extends to its interior. Sturdy doesn't have to mean primitive, and every feature is highly functional and fit for purpose. The look is clean and smart, with every control carefully placed for quick, easy use.

Resistant to scuffing and to the effects of extreme climates, the facia has practical shelves, easy-to-read dials and smart graphics. A robust two-handed passenger grab gives the passenger something to hold on to during extreme off-roading.

The recently updated climate control system is Defender's most powerful yet. The front screen defrosts and demists quicker, cold weather warm-up is faster, and it generates more heat than ever. The air conditioning, Standard on all modles cools the cabin in half the time taken by the previous model.

Welcome your passengers with up to seven adult sized, all-forward-facing seats with headrests and 3-point seatbelts. Seats can be easily stowed to accommodate a variety of loads. It's as tough as ever. It just got more comfortable and more versatile.

The entertainment system includes of high mounted tweaters, radio or CD player.

Defender offers the convenience of electric front windows and remote central locking on all models.

Driving

Overview

Land Rover is the world's leading 4x4 specialist and Defender is our most capable off-roader. Admired for its legendary simplicity, strength and ability, it's an unbeatable combination of tradition, experience, and modern technology.

Full-time four-wheel drive

Permanent four-wheel drive ensures power is sent to all four wheels continuously, on or off road. Because there's no need to switch between two-wheel and four-wheel drive when conditions change, Defender remains sure-footed and unstoppable.

Class-leading approaching and departure angles

Defender is capable of tackling a gradient of 45 degrees, an approach angle of up to 49 degrees, a departure angle of 47 degrees and a ramp break-over of up to 147 degrees.

Dual-range transfer box

Whether Defender is towing, climbing or driving off-road, control of engine Torque is provided through a robust dual-range transfer box. This gives drivers more control and the flexibility of twelve forward and two reverse gears.

Locking centre differential

When confronting difficult off-road driving conditions, the centre differential can be locked, helping prevent differential action and forcing power to be split equally between each axle. This gives superior Traction over loose ground, mud, ice or snow.

Appropriate throttle response

For instant throttle response under normal road conditions, the engine uses a Fast Throttle Control (FTC) setting: most of the engine's power is accessible in the first 30% of pedal travel. But when low range is selected, the throttle reverts to a long travel setting, allowing the gentle application of off-road power.

Electronic Traction Control

ETC Standard on 110 Station Wagon applies a braking force to any wheel that's accelerating more quickly than the others. Power is therefore redistributed to the wheels with most Traction, improving the grip.

Anti-lock Braking System

If any significant difference between wheel speeds is detected during heavy braking, the four-channel Anti-lock Braking System is designed to automatically reduce the braking force applied to that wheel, helping the driver to retain control. ABS is standard on 110 Station Wagon.

Long-travel suspension

Excellent axle articulation, thanks to coil sprung suspension, also plays its part in Defender's legendary ability (655mm for Defender 110). It helps the wheels to maintain contact with the ground and follow the contours of rough surfaces.

Engine

Overview

The Defender features a modern 2.4 litre common-rail diesel engine with peak Torque of 360Nm. With more than 90% of the power available over 60% of the rev range, that power is easy to reach and the response is quick.

Built using wind power, the 2.4 litre common-rail diesel engine makes for a powerful yet refined ride. The six-speed manual transmission features a wide spread of gear ratios, with the lower first gear offering a reduction in crawl speed and improved pull-away to make off-roading and towing even easier.

Engine

Defender's surprisingly quiet 2.4 litre diesel engine produces an exceptional 360Nm of Torque (90% of peak power is on tap from under 2,200rpm to over 4,350rpm). Designed to be fully compliant with EU4 emissions legislation, the engine's unique tuning can withstand the variable quality, high-sulphur fuels to be found in some of the more remote parts of the world.

Transmission

Every drive is enhanced by Defender's six-speed transmission. Specially developed for heavy-duty applications, it is lighter, stronger and provides smoother on-road performance, slicker gear changes and improved fuel consumption. A lower first gear reduces crawl speed and combines with the increased engine Torque to make towing almost effortless.

Station Wagon

  • With 90 and 110 wheelbases, Defender is the ultimate Station Wagon. The compact 90 seats four, while the 110 can be specified with either five or seven seats, a folding rear row providing extra loadspace on the five seat version. Whichever you choose, Defender beats some of the most extreme terrain.

Crew Cab Pick Up

  • The five-seater Crew Cab Pick Up has the capacity to carry personnel and equipment across some of the most treacherous terrain. And extensive, separate cargo bed means that loads can be kept away from passengers. Even greater versatility and capability can be added with Defender accessories.

Hard Top

  • Defender Hard Top is the robust workhorse with best in class towing capability of up to 3,500kg. And with its strong, rigid chassis it can tow more and carry more across more extreme terrain. There is also a vast variety of additional specifications and features to choose from.

Single Cab High Capacity Pick Up

  • The 110 High Capacity Pick Up version of Defender has the ability to deal with large volumes and bulky items thanks to its extended loadspace. The most awkward loads can be transported over rough terrain while the driver and occupants of the cab relax in comfort.

Chassis Cab

  • Defender's immensely strong chassis is built to a box section, ladder frame design. It makes a major contribution to the vehicle's versatility, durability and capability . The chassis architecture also lends itself to straightforward specialist adaptation and conversion for our 110 and 130 Chassis Cabs.

Crew Cab Chassis

  • The standard heavy duty Defender offers greater flexibility and capacity to suit your needs. If you need to carry five adult passengers and a specialised load, then this is the most versatile vehicle, on and off-road.

Crew Cab High Capacity Pick Up

  • The five-seater 130 Crew Cab High Capacity version of Defender takes practicality to an altogether higher level. Not only can the vehicle, and its extended loadspace, cope with huge bulky items and the most awkward cargoes, it also keeps the driver and up to four passengers safely separated from any potentially hazardous loads.
