Safety

Overview

Freelander 2 is packed with the latest primary safety systems and technology. Its extensive primary safety features - not least its responsive handling, ABS brakes, Electronic Traction Control and intelligent 4x4 system - help you avoid hazards. And the higher perspective of the Land Rover Command driving position gives you the advantage of spotting hazards well ahead of time.

Airbags

Seven airbags fitted as standard play a key role in helping to protect all occupants. Driver and front passenger airbags provide head and chest protection. Driver and front passenger side airbags give side impact protection. Full-length curtain airbags provide head impact and rollover ejection protection for all occupants. And there's even a driver's inflatable knee bolster for additional lower body protection.

Approach and departure angles

Freelander 2 is a true Land Rover which means it's built for ups and downs - literally. It has excellent approach (31°) and departure angles (34°), a minimum of 210mm ground clearance and a wading depth of up to 500mm. So you can take steep slopes, muddy fields and shallow streams in your stride.

Electronic Traction Control

Intervenes at the onset of wheel spin to progressively reduce engine Torque. If wheel acceleration has not been stopped within 50 milliseconds, braking force is applied to the wheel to help control its speed.

Electronic Brakeforce Distribution

Controls the distribution of brake forces between the front and rear wheels, to provide predictable braking under different load conditions.

Emergency Brake Assist

Detects emergency braking, then instructs the electronic brake actuator to increase hydraulic pressure to help you improve your stopping distance.

Cornering Brake Control

Feeds additional brake force to the outside front wheel when cornering, minimising the risk of rear-end breakaway when braking hard.

Dynamic Stability Control

If the car isn't responding correctly to your steering input, this system intervenes in less than 10 milliseconds to adjust the vehicle's course and cornering. It particularly helps the driver to maintain control in skid conditions.

Command driving position

Freelander 2 benefits from the classic Land Rover Command driving position. This places the driver in an elevated position, inspiring confidence and a feeling of being in control. The improved visibility also means potential hazards can be spotted well in advance.

Driving

Overview

You'll find the ride smoother than many premium saloons, let alone other 4x4s. Excellent handling makes for confident, sporty on-road driving. The wheel-out stance and wide track help deliver agility and great grip. The supple suspension system is fully independent, while rack-and-pinion steering, adjustable for reach and rake, ensures a responsive drive.

Terrain Response®

Tackle tough conditions confidently with Land Rover's patented Terrain Response® technology, standard on all models. A turn of the dial reconfigures the engine, transmission, suspension and Traction settings for optimum driveability across a variety of conditions: tarmac, grass, gravel, snow, mud, ruts and sand.

Intelligent 4WD

An innovative full-time intelligent 4x4 system is always there when you need it. The electronic centre coupling, which ensures an even smoother pull away on slippery surfaces, continuously varies the drive to suit conditions, and gives better on-road fuel economy too.

All Weather

Built to withstand the Alaskan tundra, the searing heat of the Dubai desert or up to 95% relative humidity, Freelander 2 will happily go through hell. But you needn't feel a thing, thanks to the option of an advanced dual zone Automatic Temperature Control air conditioning system with pollen filter.

All terrains

Tarmac, cobblestones, gravel, grass, mud, snow, ice, sand, ruts: we've thought of them all, and the vehicle to tackle them. We've also considered extreme weather conditions - which is why Freelander 2 has a minimum 210mm ground clearance and a wading depth of up to 500mm. All this helps ensure a comfortable ride, wherever you are.

Hill Descent Control (HDC)

Tackle hills without a second thought. Our gradient release control system guarantees smooth hill starts up and downhill: release the footbrake, and the latest generation Hill Descent Control engages smoothly. On re-starting a hill ascent, enjoy improved control with a progressive brake release. Anti-lock brakes and all-round large disc brakes enhance stability and your own driving confidence.

On-road capabilities

Freelander 2's Roll Stability Control (RSC) system is Land Rover's most sophisticated roll technology yet. It monitors wheel speed and steering wheel angle, using a vehicle tilt sensor to deliver a rapid response. Meanwhile, new-generation Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) reacts quickly if the car isn't responding correctly to your steering. This system intervenes in less than 10 milliseconds to adjust the vehicle's course and cornering - particularly useful in slippery conditions.

Engine

Overview

Freelander 2 is one of the most complete vehicles in its class. Exceptional off-road, it's as refined as a premium saloon car on road. The independent suspension with long wheel travel, coupled with the exceptionally stiff body structure, delivers agile handling with outstanding ride comfort. Two cutting edge power units deliver a perfect balance of performance, refinement and fuel economy.

Petrol engine

This 3.2 litre i6 engine 171kW combines high levels of Torque with real refinement. 80% of the maximum Torque is available across the rev range for smooth cruising and lively acceleration - 0-100kph in 8.9 seconds. The standard 6-speed automatic transmission features CommandShift™, with manual sequential gear changes and driver-selectable sports mode.

Diesel engine

The 2.2 litre TD4 turbo diesel engine (118kW) is smooth and refined. The manual transmission incorporates an intelligent Stop/Start system denoted by the TD4_e badge on the rear of the vehicle. It is the most fuel-efficient Land Rover to date, delivering a much improved combined average fuel consumption of 6.7l/100km.

Transmission

Power is nothing without control. 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes give you confidence on and off road. Standard on petrol models, and optional on diesel, the 6-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift™ cleverly adapts your personal style. It offers manual sequential gear changes and a driver-selectable sports mode.

TD4

• Powerful and practical, Freelander 2 TD4 delivers superb handling and refinement on-road as well as outstanding capability off-road. Freelander 2 TD4 with a 2.2 litre Turbo Diesel engine and six-speed manual transmission, with intelligent Stop/Start system, is the most fuel-efficient Land Rover vehicle ever.

XS

• Freelander 2 XS has all Freelander 2 TD4's great features plus many extra practical touches such as rear parking aid and front map reading lamps. There are sporty 17 inch five-split spoke alloy wheels with the option of a further three stunning alloy wheel styles.

SE
